El Peñón de Guacalillo
Ancient rocks, unforgettable sunsets and secret caves on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica
landscapeA hidden geological treasure
El Peñón de Guacalillo is an imposing volcanic rock formation that rises approximately 12 meters above the sand on the central Pacific coast of Costa Rica. These ancient rocks, sculpted by thousands of years of waves and wind, create a dramatic landscape that many visitors compare to the coast of Ireland transported to the tropics.
Located between Playa Bajamar and Playa Guacalillo, this natural cliff is one of Costa Rica's best-kept secrets. Unlike mass tourism destinations such as Jacó or Manuel Antonio, El Peñón retains an authentic and peaceful atmosphere, popular among Costa Rican families on weekends.
wb_twilightUnforgettable sunsets
The main attraction of El Peñón is its sunsets. With an unobstructed view to the west over the Pacific Ocean, the sun sets around 5:30 PM year-round, bathing the volcanic rocks in golden and orange tones that reflect on the water. It is an experience that visitors describe as spectacular and unforgettable.

During low tide, visitors can descend from the cliff and explore the caves and cavities carved into the base of the rock by millennia of marine erosion. Each tidal cycle reveals a different landscape, with tide pools where small marine creatures can be observed.

The Guacalillo Mangrove Reserve, located at the mouth of the Tárcoles River, is one of the most important sites for scarlet macaws (lapas rojas) along the entire central Pacific. The name «Guacalillo» comes from «guacamaya» (macaw), and it is common to see flocks of these birds flying in pairs at dawn and dusk. Herons, monkeys, sloths and iguanas can also be spotted in the surrounding area.
